Let me be honest here, I never had any intention of becoming a cake decorator, in fact, it never crossed my mind. I mean, really, who falls into something by accident, falls in love with that something and actually makes it work? It's nearly unheard of right?
I always knew I would have my own business and be my own boss (and eventually be the best boss in the world of course hehe) but I never envisioned myself spending my days (and nights) in my kitchen baking happiness and love into the shape of cakes.

How did this all happen? My son's first birthday!!

But before we get to that, I can hear my fiancé laughing and saying "tell them about the boomerang and echidna cakes"!!!
You see, I wasn't always good at cake decorating. My first cakes were what you would call an 'Epic Fail'. They were made with love for my little sister as farewell cakes before she went overseas for a month or so and thankfully she saw the funny side and her and her friends still ate them. Unfortunately, at that stage, I had no clue how to make buttercream icing properly (who would have thought buttercream icing had BUTTER in it after all?!!) so they ended up resembling those 'Nailed It' pictures you see splashed across the net. (i'll try and find some pictures but unfortunately (fortunately) this was long before we had digital cameras so I don't think there's any incriminating evidence laying around.....what a shame!!)

After that effort....and failure.... I gave up cake making until I fell pregnant quite a few years later and wanted to make my baby shower cake....which turned out not too bad really. See? Pretty good :-) (there was hope for me yet)

By the time my little boys first birthday arrived I had decided, like most mums, (especially with your first babies because, lets be honest, by the time the second or third one comes along the excitement over extravagant birthdays is subsiding) his 1st birthday cake was going to be nothing short of spectacular. Now, for a professional what I chose would have been a challenge so for a complete novice like myself I was really setting myself one massive task.
My first challenge was to learn how to make buttercream icing properly (so strange that it actually contains BUTTER!!!) and then I introduced myself to fondant (another challenge in itself) but the result was better than I could have ever imagined. Not because Elmo stood 16" tall, he was holding a cake and was sitting behind hand made name blocks, but because that cake started a fire inside me, a passion that has grown stronger and stronger as the days/weeks/months and years have passed. That one single cake started an unexpected snowball that has gotten completely out of control in the best way ever.

In the past 5 years I have faced challenges I never thought I would ever be able to handle, I've become a completely different person, someone who is confident in my abilities, not only as a cake decorator but in life also. This (not so) little business has changed everything about me...and I LOVE IT :-) ♥

So come and join me on my journey, be a part of the fun, this is only the beginning.
I want to hear all about your first cakes, especially the ones that failed so bad they succeeded....in making people laugh :-P
